COITUS INTERRUPTUS: Also know as withdrawl. In typical use, in this country, this method offers almost no protection against pregnancy and absolutely no protection against sexually transmitted diseases. CONDOM: A thin sheath made of latex, sheep intestines or vinyl that is placed over the penis to prevent the sperm from entering the vagina. This is a fairly good method of birth control and one of the most effective methods to stop the spread of most sexually transmitted diseases. WARNING - "Natural" or sheep intestine condoms offer no protection from the AIDS virus. VASECTOMY: A vasectomy is performed by opening a small hole in the scrotum and separating out the vasdeferans, the sperm carrying tube, and removing a small amount of it. The same procedure is then repeated for the other vas. Much the same as a tubal ligation blocks the movement of the egg to the uterus, a vasectomy interrupts the progress of sperm from the testicle to the seminal vesicles and thus there is no sperm in the ejaculate. This is a very effective means of permanent birth control. |
